Modernization and Globalization of Medicine--- Summary on Chinese Executive Hospital Management Leadership Program in Boston

The first “Executive Hospital Management Leadership Program” was held at Harvard Medical School from November 2nd to 6th 2011, hosted by American Chinese Medical Exchange Society. Dr. Xuejun Kong, Attending Physician of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Instructor of Harvard Medical School, Dr.Weigen Li, Attending Physician of Jordan Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Ms.Xylina Wu, Director of Business Development Massachusetts International Trade and Investment Office (MOITI), act as co-directors of the program, Dr.Lucy Chen, Attending Aneathesiologist and pain specialist of MGH, Assistant Professor of Harvard Medical School, Dr.Yiqing Song, Senior Epidemiologist of Brigham & Woman Hospital, Assistant Professor of Harvard medical School, Dr. Le Min, Attending Endocrinologist of Brigham & Woman Hospital, Instructor of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Zhao Liu, Attending Endocrinologist of Beverly Hospital, also served as moderators of the program.

The main purpose of the training program is to provide chief medical and administrative leaders of China hospitals an executive education program, at Harvard Medical School and major affiliated teaching hospitals to learn and exchange knowledge and experience in hospital management, provide a basic grounding in how resources for quality and safety, leadership and innovation are organized and managed in the major Harvard affiliated hospitals, demonstrate to the program participants with concrete examples of modern technologies and tools and concepts used to improve quality and safety in healthcare institutions and how they have been applied at the Harvard Hospitals.

The curriculum was delivered over the course of 3 days, and includes tours of the three major teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School: BIDMC, MGH and Brigham and Women Hospital and other local hospitals. Course faculty is selected from members of the Harvard faculty leadership team and other top healthcare facility. The course was held at Joseph B Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School and Harvard hospital campus, and had simultaneous translation into Chinese. Ten leading medical experts and healthcare leaders of Harvard and other top medical facilities were invited to be the lecturers of the program, including Prof. Peter Libby, Prof. Vikas P. Sukhatme, Prof. Douglas Hanto, Prof. John Halamka, Prof. Ursula Kaiser, Prof. Jianren Mao, Prof. Andrew Zhu, Prof.John Cai, Mr. Charlie Baker, Mr. John Christoforo, Mr.Peter Holden, Mr. Sujun Zhang and Dr.Mark Li. 11 Chinese Hospital CEOs from Tianjin, China and Henan, China attended the program, and total over 150 local physicians and healthcare leaders participated the three evening medical forums as part of the program. The course focuses on the following areas: 1) Medical System and trend of USA; 2) Modern Medicine and Innovation; 3) Center of clinical Excellence; 4) Translational Research. The program was wrapped with a great success.
